Understanding the Sabine Equation
The Sabine equation is the foundational formula for estimating reverberation time in enclosed spaces. Developed by Wallace Clement Sabine in the early 1900s, it relates room volume to total absorption.
Where V is the room volume in cubic feet and A is the total absorption in Sabins (surface area × absorption coefficient).
What is RT60?
RT60 is the time it takes for sound to decay by 60 decibels after the source stops. A shorter RT60 means less echo and better speech intelligibility. Most large spaces benefit from an RT60 between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds, depending on their intended use.
Limitations
The Sabine equation is an approximation that works best for rooms with relatively uniform absorption. For spaces with very uneven distribution of absorptive materials, or for very large or irregularly shaped rooms, more advanced modeling is needed. Contact us for a professional assessment.
